Mary, Undoer of Knots: A Devotion of Hope and Trust

Life often becomes tangled with worries, disappointments, broken relationships, financial struggles, illness, grief, and uncertainty. These burdens can feel like tightly tied knots that we cannot untangle on our own.

For centuries, Catholics have turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the beautiful title Mary, Undoer of Knots (also known as Mary, Untier of Knots) to ask her loving intercession. This devotion reminds us that no knot is too tight for God's grace and no situation is beyond His mercy.

The image of Mary patiently untying knots is a powerful symbol of her maternal care. Just as a loving mother gently untangles a child's knotted ribbon without breaking it, Mary lovingly presents our struggles to her Son, Jesus Christ, asking Him to bring healing, peace, and restoration.

The Origin and History of Mary, Undoer of Knots

The devotion to Mary, Undoer of Knots has its roots in Germany during the early 1700s.

A German nobleman named Wolfgang Langenmantel and his wife Sophie were experiencing severe marital difficulties. Their marriage had deteriorated to the point where separation seemed inevitable.

Seeking God's help, Wolfgang met with the Jesuit priest Father Jakob Rem. During several meetings, Father Rem encouraged the couple to pray fervently and entrust their marriage to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As a symbolic act of faith, Father Rem took the couple's white wedding ribbon—a traditional sign of their marriage covenant—and slowly untied every knot in it while praying to Our Lady.

When he finished, the ribbon was perfectly smooth and brilliantly white.

The couple experienced reconciliation, and their marriage was restored.

Many years later, around 1700, the German artist Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner painted the famous image now known throughout the world as Mary, Undoer of Knots. The painting depicts Mary standing upon the crescent moon, crushing the serpent beneath her feet while patiently untying a ribbon filled with knots.

Each knot represents the struggles, sins, fears, disappointments, and difficulties that believers entrust to her intercession.

Although this devotion remained relatively unknown outside Germany for many years, it gained worldwide popularity through the encouragement of Pope Francis. As a young priest studying in Germany during the 1980s, he developed a deep devotion to Mary, Undoer of Knots and later helped spread it throughout the Church.

Today, millions of Catholics pray this novena, trusting that the Blessed Mother will lovingly present every impossible situation to Jesus.
